Foreword
When the roll of honour was set up on the wall of the Avondale Baptist Church, the people named on it were well known. Even those who had lost their lives, and would never return, were well remembered; some were still worshipping here during my term as Minister of the church from 1959 to 1967. but with the passing of the years many who were once well known have been forgotten. Their service to church and country is likely to be overlooked.
By writing this book Tony Goodwin has rendered a service to those soldiers, sailors and airmen who once worshipped here. It involved very diligent research into military records and conversations and correspondence with people who had known them well.
I appreciate what Tony has done. To know the past helps us understand the present. The service and sacrifice of these figures should not be forgotten as the church moves into the future.
Stan Edgar, ex minister Avondale Baptist Church.
Avondale Baptist Church
Avondale Baptist church had the opening services on Sunday 21 March 1926. There were services at 11am, 3pm, and 7pm. On Sunday evening 20 June of that year, twenty six people were recognised as foundation members of the church. They were the parents of those who later served in the Armed Forces during World War Two.
