Paul Windsor principal of Carey Baptist College from 1998-2009 shared his reflection as principal of the college.
My mind has been like a clothes dry-er with this one... How should I respond to the invitation to offer a personal reflection on these years in theological education? When the cycle finished I decided that I needed to commence by naming the fact that I came into this job as an 'outsider'. I have not been nurtured by this movement of churches. My upbringing in India with Interserve in combination with my theological training in the USA have taken me far from this heritage. I have eaten at different dinners. Furthermore I have been the first Principal in (almost) 50 years not to be a graduate of the college - and the connections I have had with it over the years have been tenuous.
As a teenager I attended a Summer School with Pidwell on Peter, Thompson on World Religions and with Turley being the first 'significant other' to affirm a call to preaching. As a new pastor I attended the Probationary Ministers' Course. I sat in a room listening to youthful Brian Winslades, Charles Ricketts, Beryl Turners, Mike Riddells, Trevor Geddeses, Rob Kilpatricks, Stewart Hannas etc ... and fresh from my 'americana' training wondered how on earth there weren't half a dozen Baptist denominations represented! Then as a lecturer at BCNZ/Laidlaw I would bring the Baptist Distinctives class over to Carey each year for some Baptist orientation. But that is about it...
